In very rare cases, if Microsoft decides a vulnerability is critical enough and could have a major impact on the Windows ecosystem, they may release a security update for even out of service versions of Windows.įor example, a critical wormable Remote Desktop vulnerability called BlueKeep (CVE-2019-0708) was discovered in May and Microsoft decided to issue a security update for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. "To continue to receive quality updates beyond these dates, you will need to update those devices to the current version of Windows 10, version 1903."
When a Windows version becomes out of service, Microsoft will no longer fix any bugs found in that version or release security updates that fix new vulnerabilities that are discovered.Īs of October 8th, 2019, users running consumer, enterprise, and education versions of Windare required to upgrade to Windin order to continue receiving updates. Windows 10 version 1703, otherwise known as the Creators Update, has now reached end of service and will no longer receive any future security or quality updates.
